💰Setting Starting Bids, Minimum Bids, and Buy Now Values

⚙️ What Are These Settings?

ClickBid allows you to set key price points on silent auction items including:

  • Starting Bid: The price bidding begins at.

  • Raise (Increment) Amount: The amount a bidder must increase from the current bid.

  • Buy Now Price: Lets bidders skip the auction and purchase the item outright.

These values help guide bidding behavior and maximize revenue. Here’s how to set them up wisely and where to do it in your admin.

🛠️ How to Set Starting Bids, Raise Increments, and Buy Now

1️⃣ Go to Your Items

  • Navigate to the Items tab.

  • Click Manage Items.

Here’s where you’ll input Start, Raise, and optionally, Buy Now values.

2️⃣ Set or Adjust Values

For each item:

  • Start = Starting bid

  • Raise = Minimum increase required per bid

  • Buy Now = Optional price to skip bidding and instantly purchase

The Buy Now option is only available for Silent item types.

🛒 Buy Now: Tips & Best Practices

✅ When to Use Buy Now

  • Use when you have a strong FMV and want to offer a skip-the-line purchase.

  • Avoid on items with emotional or sentimental value (e.g. kid art, VIP parking, lunch with a teacher).

💡 Recommended Buy Now Pricing

Set your Buy Now at 150–200% of the Fair Market Value (FMV). This avoids undercutting competitive bidding.

Low Buy Now values can hurt your auction totals. We’ve seen events lose money due to undervalued Buy Now prices!

❗Important Behavior

If a bidder places a regular bid above the Buy Now value, the Buy Now button disappears. They do not win the item for that price unless they specifically click Buy Now.

📈 Starting Bids & Raise Amounts

🎯 Suggested Starting Bids (based on FMV)

FMV Range Suggested Starting Bid
Under $100 Round to nearest $5
Up to $400 Round to nearest $10
Up to $600 Round to nearest $25
Up to $800 Round to nearest $50
Over $1000 Round to nearest $100

Start your pricing around 30–45% of FMV for general items.

For consignment items, make sure your starting bid covers the cost owed to the consignment vendor!

📈 Raise (Increment) Guidelines

FMV Range Suggested Raise Amount
$50–$150 $5
$150–$250 $10
$250–$400 $20
$400–$600 $25
$600–$1000 $50
$1000+ $100

Incremental bids are typically 5–8% of FMV. Start at 5% for low-FMV items and move up to 8% for higher-value items.

🛑 When NOT to Use Buy Now

Do not add a Buy Now price to:

  • Items with sentimental value

  • Items with unclear or non-monetary FMV

  • Unique experiences that might create emotional bidding wars

🖼️ Bidder View Example

When a bidder views an item with Buy Now enabled, they will see a Buy Now button next to the current bid options. Once a bid exceeds the Buy Now price, that option disappears.

If you're selling multiple quantities of the same item, do not use Buy Now.
Instead, mark the item as a Quantity type and enter your price as the Start.
