Is there a specific format that I should save my spreadsheet in?

We normally recommend saving in CSV, but if you are trying to import a spreadsheet that has special characters, use CSV UTF-8. (When the spreadsheet is open go to File > Save As and click on the down arrow for format type and select from the drop-down.)

No specific cell format is needed for columns. You can leave them all to General.
